Homemade VS Store Bought Dog Treats

Homemade VS Store Bought Dog Treats

At May and Lou, we love the idea of homemade treats. Storebought brands can add enrichment to your pup’s life, and who doesn’t love a yummy treat? However, we found that baking our own treats at home was the healthier alternative for many reasons.

Knowing exactly what goes into your dog’s treats is very important for us. When we bought from the store, we never really knew what half those ingredients were! Our furry friends love to eat scraps of cooked chicken, vegetables, and fruits. What better way to reward them than to bundle all their favorite snacks into one treat?

We would like to preface that before you get creative with your homemade treat recipes, check with your vet regarding foods that are safe for your dog.

Several recipes and experiments later, these are the top ingredients we found to be delicious, safe, and healthy for our pups.

For fruits: Oranges, Strawberries, Bananas, Mango, Apples, Blueberries. (Remember to remove any cores or seeds!)
For protein: Beef, Turkey, Chicken, Salmon, Eggs (Make sure all are cooked through)
For baking: Rice, Oatmeal, Whole grain flower, Peanut Butter (Make sure it’s xylitol free).

Be sure to avoid caffeine, high sugar, chocolate, and anything with alcohol content. A quick chat with your vet will let you know which foods to avoid. Keep experimenting with your recipes and before you know it, you’ll have the most delectable treat that will get your dog excited for snack time every day!
